Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo will be eligible to play for Switzerland next month after facing consequences for using forged Covid-19 vaccination certificates.

Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo will be back in action for the Swiss national team next month. Following an investigation into their use of forged Covid-19 vaccination certificates, both players have been cleared to participate in upcoming fixtures against Slovenia and Scotland.

Xhaka, who serves as Switzerland's captain, missed several Nations League matches during the October international break due to the controversy. He admitted to acquiring a fake vaccination certificate, which allowed him to travel and compete in 2022. Embolo faced similar consequences and was also dropped from the squad in September.

The Swiss Football Association (SFV) announced that both players would be available for selection by manager Murat Yakin. National team director Pierluigi Tami stated that their return is a responsible decision, taking into account the specific circumstances of each case and the sporting consequences already faced.

Each player was fined 150,000 Swiss francs (approximately £136,000) and has a two-year suspension, which will only be enforced if further offenses occur. Xhaka has retained his captaincy, although the final decision regarding his role will be made by coach Yakin, who is set to announce his squad on November 5.

Switzerland currently leads Group E as they prepare for their final two Nations League fixtures on November 13 and 16 against Slovenia and Scotland, respectively.
