A glass sculpture and medals were stolen from a memorial commemorating the victims of the Munich air disaster, which claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight Manchester United players. The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation is urging the return of the stolen items, which hold significant emotional value for bereaved families.

In a distressing incident, a glass sculpture and several medals have been stolen from the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Munich air disaster. The theft occurred at Manchesterplatz in Munich, where the memorial honors the 23 individuals, including eight Manchester United players, who lost their lives in the tragic plane crash on February 6, 1958.

The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation expressed deep sorrow over the theft, emphasizing the emotional impact it has on the families of the victims. Ifty Ahmed, the chair of the foundation, highlighted that the memorial serves as a place of solace for those mourning their loved ones. He noted that while the physical items have been taken, the memories of those lost remain intact, underscoring the importance of preserving the memorial's integrity.

Mark Salzmann, chairman of Red Docs Munich, a supporters' group that helps care for the memorial, shared that the glass display case was smashed with a rock during the theft. The stolen items were unique and irreplaceable, with discussions underway about possible replacements. The foundation has already repaired the glass case, but the emotional damage from the theft lingers. Support from rival fan groups, including Liverpool and Manchester City supporters, has poured in, demonstrating the shared respect for the memory of those lost.

The memorial has become a site of remembrance, drawing around 1,500 attendees to its annual service each February. As the community rallies around the memorial, the foundation hopes the stolen items will be returned, allowing families to continue honoring their loved ones in a meaningful way.
