The Key Match Incidents panel ruled that Chelsea's Cole Palmer should have received a straight red card during the match against Tottenham. This decision comes amid a broader review of refereeing decisions in the Premier League.
Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has narrowly avoided a more severe punishment following a contentious incident during the match against Tottenham Hotspur on October 24. The Premier League's Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel has determined that Palmer should have been shown a straight red card for violent conduct, but ultimately only received a one-match ban after being sent off for two yellow cards.
In the 70th minute of the match, Palmer clashed with Spurs midfielder Mateus Fernandes, leading to a yellow card for the Chelsea player. The KMI panel, reviewing the incident, voted 3-2 in favor of the opinion that the challenge constituted violent conduct, noting there was "clear contact to the head" and that the action was deemed "unnecessary and dangerous".
Review of Match Decisions
Despite the majority opinion on the initial foul, the panel unanimously supported the VAR's decision not to intervene, which allowed the yellow card to stand. Palmer's eventual dismissal came ten minutes later when he received a second yellow for a foul on Conor Gallagher.
This ruling means Palmer will miss Chelsea's upcoming EFL Cup tie against Liverpool but will be available for the Premier League match against Manchester United. The KMI panel also reviewed other incidents from the matchday, including missed penalty calls in different fixtures, reinforcing the ongoing scrutiny of officiating in the league this season.
